Introduction to the SEAM

The Social Emotional Assessment Measure (SEAM) is a newly developed assessment that focuses on children's social emotional behaviors. Items were developed from 10 key child benchmarks thought to be critical for healthy social-emotional development. Each benchmark includes a set of related items. For example, the benchmark, Toddler begins to show empathy for others, includes items such as, Toddler uses words to talk about another child’s emotions and Toddler tries to comfort others when they are upset.

We are in the initial stage of collecting data on the SEAM for children ages 3 months to 5 years. Your time completing the SEAM on your child (about 15-30 minutes) will add to our research database. We appreciate your interest and welcome your feedback.

What do I need to do?

  • Answer a few questions about your child and family
  • Fill out the age appropriate SEAM questionnaire for your child

What happens after I complete the questionnaire?
  • Optionally provide us with your thoughts about the SEAM
  • Optionally complete another questionnaire to learn more about your child's development.
  • Fun play activities for supporting your child's social-emotional development are available for download
